Suquet

Suquet

Le Suquet is the old city and the heart of Cannes. The Romans founded the first settlement here in 154 BC. Later, in the 12th century, the monks from the monastery of Saint Honorat (one of the Lerins Islands) built a church and a fortress on the hill. Over time the city of Cannes began to grow around the fortress.

The museum of local history 'Musée de la Castre' is situated on the base of the fortress. The museum exhibits rich collections of archeology and ethnography, art from Oceania, Asia, Egypt, Africa, South and North America, as well as household items from the peoples of Greece, Rome, Iran, Mesopotamia and many others.
You will also find here unique canvases of Provencal and Cannes artists from the 19th and 20th centuries.
After a relaxing day we advise you to climb in the evening to the top of the hill, listen to the sound of the evening bells and enjoy the breathtaking view of the city and the Bay of Cannes.

Le Suquet still retains most of its original charm with small cobbled streets, cosy shops and restaurants. At the foot of the hill you'll find the Old Harbour with its classic fishing boats and luxury yachts. The main market Marche Forville is also situated here, awash with flowers and filled with vegetables, fruits and a variety of local delicacies. All this at your doorstep!
